Many users have found that they can use RealOne player from home without problems to play video and audio from the web, but have problems when trying to do the same in schools. The problems are generally caused by the network configurations in schools that use proxy servers to access the Internet and possibly firewalls to protect the school's network. However, it is possible to set-up RealOne player to use the school's proxy server and to access online media using the same protocols (http) as used for web pages. The instructions below will help you to do this if you are having problems getting the RealOne player to work in school.
(If you have a firewall but no proxy server, you can ignore the proxy server parts of these instructions. For users at home, it is best to let RealOne player configure itself automatically.)
RealOne player needs to be configured to enable it to work properly in schools that use proxy servers between client computers and the Internet. This is not a difficult task and can be completed in a few minutes. The screens-shots below and the brief instructions that accompany them should enable you to configure the RealOne player properly.
It is assumed here that on the system being configured, web pages are viewed in Internet Explorer and that the system settings on the computer are set up to use an appropriate proxy server to access the Internet. If you currently manually configure the IE browser, you should set the system Internet settings to the correct proxy server in 'Internet settings' in the control panel or system settings options of your computer.
You will need to have the RealOne player installed on your computer. If this is not the case, it may be obtained at no charge by clicking here. Ensure you choose the free player option on the right-hand side of the screen.
Once you have installed the RealOne player, follow the instructions below:-
| Run the RealOne player from the start and
programs buttons.
Then select the 'Tools' option from the menu at the top of the RealOne player window.
|
|
| This will give you a drop-down menu of
further options.
Click on the 'Preferences' option at the bottom of the list |
|
| The window shown to the right will appear. | |
| Select the 'Connection' option in the
left-hand window. In the right-hand window, select from the drop
down lists an appropriate connection speed. It is suggested that for
schools with a broadband link choose the DSL/Cable (256 Kbps) settings as
shown. For schools with an ISDN link, use the 56K or single
ISDN or dual ISDN setting. Remember you may have several
computer systems trying to use players at the same so you cannot let one
system take all the available connection bandwidth.
Then click the 'OK' button |
|
| Next, select the 'Network Transports' option from the menu
in the left hand side of the window.
In the right-hand window tick the box to enable you to manually configure the connections settings. Then click on the 'RTSP Settings' button. |
|
| In the RTSP Transport Settings window
make sure all tick boxes are clear EXCEPT the one for 'Attempt to use HTTP
for all content'. This box should be ticked.
Then click on the OK button, which will return you to the 'Network Transports' window. |
|
| Click on the PNA settings button | |
| As before, ensure that all tick boxes are
clear apart from the one for 'Attempt to use HTTP for all content' which
should be ticked.
Then click on the 'ok' button |
|
| Next, in the left-hand window, select the
'Proxy' option.
The right hand window should be as shown here. Towards the bottom of the right-hand window, click on the 'Change Settings' button. |
|
| The 'Streaming Proxy Settings' window
will appear.
Ensure that the HTTP proxy is set as shown to use the system Internet Connection settings. Then click on the 'OK' button |
|
| You will be returned to the window
shown. Click on the 'OK' button to exit the preferences menu.
This will return you to the RealOne player window.
|
|
| Now exit the program to save your settings. | |
| To test your setup of the RealOne player, click on one of the links to the right. If you see and hear a brief video track then it is working! |
