The main focus of the ICT Strand is on ICT capability. ICT capability is considered to be more than the acquisition of ‘basic skills’ and ‘techniques’, i.e. it is the development of pupils’ ability to use the technology imaginatively and flexibly. It encompasses the ability to identify, understand and apply appropriate knowledge, skills and understanding.

The
Framework for teaching ICT: Years 7, 8 and 9 was published in September 2002. It contains advice on planning, teaching and assessing ICT capability in Key Stage 3 and illustrate how teachers can use and develop their own schemes of work from the DfES/QCA Scheme of Work for ICT in Key Stage 3.

The Framework outlines the yearly teaching objectives for years 7, 8 & 9, the expected development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills in ICT capability. The objectives, based on the Key Stage 3 programme of study for ICT, are important markers of pupils’ progress.

The Framework illustrates how the objectives ensure good continuity and progression in the ICT curriculum from Year 7 to Year 9, provides challenge and raises expectations. Teachers will be able to use them to:

focus their teaching on those things that will move pupils on;
inform their assessments, so that critical indicators of progression are addressed;

set targets for pupils and thus help them to achieve the expected standards.
