Frequently asked questions

Some questions you asked at the ICT Launch days and some answers we gave

Q1. Will funding be available for the hardware and software required to teach ICT capability at KS3?

A1. The KS3 Strategy funding targets support for teaching and learning to raise standards in ICT. Most schools will already have the software needed to deliver ICT. The sample teaching units do not require schools to use any specific software.
All Bedfordshire schools receive funding towards their hardware, software and communications costs as part of the ICT in Schools initiative.

Q2. Why is it recommended that ICT be taught as a discrete subject?

A2. Evidence from the ICT Strand pilot schools reveals that where ICT was taught as a discrete subject, standards improved.

Q3. Do I need to adopt the Strategy?

A3. The Strategy aims to support lesson planning by offering frameworks of objectives, set out year by year, training, resources and support from consultants to help you to adapt the ideas in your own school. You may want to review your own scheme of work against the framework and teaching units.

Q4. Do I need to change my scheme of work?

A4. No, not necessarily. When you review your scheme of work, you will not necessarily have to make major changes. Check that it is objective led and not activity led, and that there is appropriate progression.

Q5. Have I got to do this all at once? I can’t.

A5. No, the message from the Strategy is that this year is a year to make any changes, and to try out some of the teaching units, so that by September 2003 an effective ICT curriculum is in place.
