Core Training - Second round - Assessment

Top

Teachers deep in discussion at one of the Standards and Assessment Training days at Shuttleworth College

Another action-packed day! The second round of core training in February 2003 provided Heads of ICT and other KS3 ICT teachers with a one day training session that focussed on:

Session 1 - Assessment for learning in ICT: We explored the key issues involved in the assessment of ICT and recognising the standards reached by pupils, and the differences between summative assessment and assessment for learning

Session 2 - Sharing objectives with pupils, planning and recording assessments in ICT: This session focussed on examining lesson objectives and outcomes, and the advantages of phrasing the objectives in a language that pupils can understand. Issues of recording assessment were discussed and the importance of assessing process as well as outcome was highlighted

Session 3 - Agreeing standards in Key Stage 3 ICT: The afternoon was spent examining pupils’ work, agreeing levels in line with the national standard and discussing the evidence required to make a judgement

What you said at the end of the day:

The day really helped us to evaluate our current position in terms of assessing ICT and setting appropriate objectives and outcomes.

This training has confirmed the importance and values of pupils’ self assessment. Involving pupils in assessment by giving them the marking criteria and encouraging self assessment is an excellent learning experience.

It is very clear now that I need to shift my emphasis, when assessing, from skills to ICT capability.

It was a good opportunity to discuss assessment with colleagues and, in particular, our feeder schools, so that we all now have a clearer idea of assessing at the right levels.

We now understand the importance of assessing the ICT process and not just the result.

Moderating children’s work in line with the national standard was very useful.

I felt that the pieces of the jigsaw had been put together. It was also interesting to see the Assessment for Learning materials in a different light..
