FIRE RISK – STORAGE IN PLANT/ BOILER ROOMS

Arson at schools is on the increase again. Every day, three schools in the UK suffer from an arson attack. Arson accounts for 85% of all school fires. In many school fires, whether accidental or malicious, combustible waste is a very common source of fire material.

Recent insurance surveys have revealed that in some schools in this Authority, plant/boiler rooms are still being used for storage purposes, despite all the advice against this practice, contained in both the Risk Management Manual and the Caretakers Handbook.

There is no doubt that those schools which store combustible materials, equipment, or swimming pool chemicals in plant/boiler rooms, are still running an above average risk of fire, whether by malicious or accidental means, with potentially catastrophic results.
In summary, plant /boiler rooms should never be used for storage purposes and it would be much appreciated if this requirement could again be brought to the attention of the school site agent or caretaker.

Health and Safety Law Poster

The law states that every workplace should display a copy of the poster "Health and Safety Law". The existing poster has been revised and employers are required to replace the existing poster with the new version by June 2000.

The Health, Safety and Welfare Manager at County Hall is purchasing the poster on behalf of all establishments and will distribute copies to all schools as soon as it is available.
