Bedfordshire Calculation Policy
Children need to
understand what they do and what they record in mathematics. They should
never record in a way that does not mirror their understanding. As a county
we have particular problems in ensuring that progression in understanding
and recording calculation continues across each school phase. To this end we
are promoting a cross-county calculation policy, so that whichever Lower
school a child moves from, and whichever Middle school they move to,
approaches are consistent. The policy highlights the need to develop thinking skills and understanding,
and removes the need to teach processes for calculations. More time can then
be spent on problem solving and collaborative work and discussion. |
