Romans has
been a really exciting topic to find out about and lots of children have been bringing in
books and posters from home to share with the rest of the class.
Our first art project was all about Roman mosaics and we learned how the Romans had to make each square one by one which made it a very long and complicated process indeed. We decided to make our own mosaics with salt dough.
We had to bake our bases for about three hours before they were hard enough to paint. We each did between 2 and 4 designs in out history books. Some were patterns, others were pictures and some were based on letters.
Why do you think the person on the left chose to do an 'R' for their design?
Ask someone in class four to tell you if you were right.
We enjoyed doing our mosaics so much that we decided to do some even bigger ones, in groups, to show the different sorts of clothes that Romans wore.
This picture only shows part of one of huge group mosaics. Look at how beautifully neatly the children in this group have made their border. It is quite simple but very effective.
We found out all about slaves, provincials, freedmen, priests, centurions and emperors. You will have to have a look in class four to see which design this is part of.
