We have also spent lots of time working on an art project all about People.
Stage One : Hidden Names
We looked some work by Paul Klee and talked about how he had painted a message. We wondered if it could be a hidden message and thought about who it might be to. We did out names in a similar way with water colour paints and then decorated them with patterns.
Stage Two : Van Gogh Inspired Portraits
We looked at a selection of portrait work by Vincent van Gogh and talked about the way he used swirls and layers of mixed colours to create really textured, heavy areas. We practiced layering and mixing our colours working with wax crayons. We then drew self portraits in an even more imaginative and 'wild' style.

Stage Three : Picasso Inspired Work
The children talked about how traditional portraits usually show one view of a person. They practiced looking at and sketching people from lots of different, varied views and then created an oil pastel portrait. After they had completed their work, they looked at Picasso's cubist portraits and compared his ideas with theirs.

Find a copy of 'Weeping Woman' by Pablo Picasso and compare it to our work.
Stage Four : Mask Making
The children began by looking at six masks from other countries and made lots of sketches focussing on the textures and patterns in the wood.

The children then designed their own masks using ideas from each of the ones they had looked at.
Next, we looked at lots of different paper techniques including tearing, folding, pleating and layering. The children worked on designs for faces using coloured paper and card.

We linked this to literacy work (writing instructions / describing personal and physical characteristics) and ICT (using Word Art).
The final part of mask making was working in clay to create a design. The children were also able to bring in items such as beads, sequins and ribbons to decorate and complete their work.

We completed our art topic by writing stories about our creatures.
