INFORMATION ON TRAINING AVAILABLE


The following courses are suitable for teachers and practitioners working in Maintained Nurseries or Reception Units.

 

Course Title: The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

This is a two-day course to support leaders and practitioners in delivering the EYFS which is mandatory from September 2008.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To support knowledge and understanding of the EYFS framework and principles

• To support settings’ implementation of the EYFS

• To identify areas for development and training in relation to the EYFS

 


Course Title: Leading the Development of Early Years Practice.

This two-day course will support nursery and reception class teachers to develop a vision and principled approach to leading a team and monitoring and evaluating practice within the Early Years Foundation Stage.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To develop understanding of the features of effective team work (even if the team only consists of two people!)

• To develop understanding of the role and responsibilities of the “team” leader

• To raise awareness of the challenges involved in changing and developing practice and to develop strategies for leading the change process

• To develop strategies for dealing with challenging team members

• To develop strategies for monitoring and evaluating practice in the setting
 


Course Title: Room to Learn.

This course is six ½ day sessions. Each session will include theory, discussion and plenty of practical ideas on creating high quality provision which encompasses the KEEP Principals and the EYFS requirements.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To develop an understanding of the importance of quality provision in maximising children’s development and learning.

• To understand the philosophy underpinning an enabling environment and how it can promote child-initiated learning

• To enable practitioners to create an effective, high quality learning environment within their setting.

 


Course Title: Communicating Matters.

This is a six session course to further practitioners’ knowledge and understanding of communication by reflecting and developing their own practice.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To deepen practitioners understanding of children’s communication and language, particularly between the ages of 3 and 5

• To deepen practitioners understanding of how their own communicative behaviour impacts on children’s use and display of communicative behaviours

• To help practitioners reflect and develop their practice to promote children’s communication and language more effectively

 


Course Title: Look Listen and Note 3-5 Year Olds.

This two day course will support practitioners (including those required to complete the EYFS Profile) in developing observation and assessment skills and in using this information to inform their planning.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To develop practitioners’ observation and recording skills

• To support practitioners in using information from observations and assessments to inform planning and organisation of the learning environment

• To support practitioners in developing useful and manageable record keeping systems and tracking children’s progress

 


Course Title: Supporting Children’s Personal, Social and Emotional Development from birth to five.

This three day course will help to develop, promote and increase practitioners’ awareness and understanding of the personal, social and emotional aspects of babies and young children’s development and learning.

 

Learning Intentions:

• Raise awareness of the factors affecting babies and young children’s personal, social and emotional development and learning

• Raise awareness of the outcomes associated with babies and young children’s personal, social and emotional development and learning

• Raise awareness of strategies for supporting the personal ,social and emotional aspects of babies and young children’s development and learning

• Raise awareness of the practitioner’s role in supporting the personal, social and emotional aspects of babies and young children’s development.

 


Course Title: Using Self Evaluation to Support Improvement.
This two session course will provide practitioners with guidance about how to monitor and evaluate the quality of their setting, draw up an effective action plan and develop practice.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To support practitioners in using self evaluation processes to identify strengths and weaknesses in their provision

• To help practitioners draw up an effective action plan to support the improvement of identified areas for development

• To support confidence with Ofsted inspection and outcomes

 


Course Title: Observing and Assessing for the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP).

This one day course will support practitioners working with children during the final year of the EYFS, particularly those who are newly qualified or new to the EYFS.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To develop practitioners’ confidence in using ongoing observations and assessments to make judgements against the EYFSP

• To support practitioners’ understanding of the purpose and use of the profile

• To make sure practitioners are aware of requirements and updated guidance regarding the EYFSP.

 


Course Title: “Who is coming for me today?” All about transitions in young children’s lives.

This two ½ day session course will develop a deeper understanding of how change and transitions between and within settings can impact on young children’s emotional well being and ability to learn.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To support practitioners understanding of the nature and impact of change on young children’s lives, looking particularly at the experience and needs of more vulnerable children – children who have already experienced upheaval, who have communication and learning difficulties, children new to English.

• To provide an overview of some of the theory and research on the subject of transitions – Emotional Resilience, Attachment, Planning for change

• To look at practical ideas and ways to support children and families through the process of change and transitions.

 


Course Title: Involving Parents in their Children’s Learning.

This course comprises of two full day sessions and two ½ day sessions. The course will reflect on the EYFS requirements for working with parents and offers opportunity to evaluate and reassess current practice and develop new strategies in this area.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To develop an understanding of the theory and the practice that underpins working with parents and the way that involving parents in their children’s learning enhances both children’s development and adult pedagogical approaches

• To develop an understanding of how to evaluate current practice in relation to involving parents in their children’s learning in an early years setting. “The need to involve parents is high on the political agenda – their experiences and attitudes to school are acknowledged to affect their children’s achievements and is a factor of greater significance than school improvement (DfEE PN 400/97, DfEE PN 250/98” Margy Whalley, 2001

• To develop new strategies for working with parents.
