Minorities Achievement
Support Service
 

 

MASS offers training that is tailored to the requirements of individual/groups of schools in the following areas:

  • Meeting the needs of Minority Ethnic pupils in school

  • Planning the curriculum for a culturally diverse society (disseminating new resources for an inclusive curriculum)

  • Meeting the needs of particular groups of pupils e.g. African, Caribbean or mixed heritage pupils

  • Race Equality Standards / Dealing with racist incidents

  • Raising awareness of cultural differences when working with minority ethnic communities

  • Understanding the needs of asylum seekers and refugees.

  • New arrivals from overseas – admission and induction

  • Language acquisition/development and strategies to support bilingual pupils

  • Meeting the needs of Ethnic Minority and EAL pupils in the mainstream classroom

  • Distinguishing language and cultural needs from learning needs

  • Community Cohesion – What does it look like in practice?

INFORMATION ON TRAINING AVAILABLE


The following courses are suitable for Mainstream Teachers working in primary age phase:

Course Title: Integrating Global and Anti-Racist Perspectives Within the Primary Curriculum (GARP)
This course will take place at the Rufus Centre, Flitwick on 18/06/09 from 13:30 to 16:00 to look at practical ways of making the curriculum more culturally inclusive by integrating global and anti-racist perspectives into the daily teaching and learning activities.

Learning Intentions:

• To introduce the GARP resource pack
• To explore ways in which the GARP resource can be used in the classroom and further disseminated in the school
• To promote Community Cohesion through the curriculum

 


Course Title: Creating a Positive Climate for Learning; the Persona Dolls Way (Introducing Persona Dolls to the Classroom)

This course will take place at Kingsland Skills and Enterprise Centre, Houghton Regis on 16/10/08 from 13:30 to 16:00. The course will be useful for schools looking for a non threatening way to deal sensitively with issues around racism, cultural identity and diversity with young children.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To introduce Persona Dolls

• To consider how Persona Dolls can be used in the classroom to tackle issues relating to Race Equality and Community Cohesion
 


The following courses are suitable for Mainstream Teachers and Teaching Assistants working in Lower and Middle Schools:

 

Course Title: Working with EAL learners in the classroom: practical ideas.

This course will take place at MASS, County Hall, on the 16/09/08 from 13:30 to 16:00 to support teachers in making the curriculum more accessible to EAL learners.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To become familiar with a variety of practical activities and strategies for making the curriculum accessible, that can be adapted for use in different curriculum areas

• To become familiar with a variety of practical activities and strategies for promoting language learning, that can be adapted to use in different curriculum areas

 


Course Title: Formative Assessment for Learners of English as an Additional Language.

This course will take place at Beadlow Manor on 06/11/08 and 12/03/08 from 14:00 to 16:00 to support teachers in the assessment of EAL pupils.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To present staff with a ready-made format for assessment and target setting coupled with support for early stage EAL pupils.

• To demonstrate a way of extending the Bedfordshire EAL Profile Documents (Beds English Language Profile & Tracker and Individual Language) to provide for assessment for learning.
 


The following course is suitable for Mainstream Teachers and Teaching Assistants working in Middle and Upper Schools:

 

Course Title: Working with EAL learners in the classroom: practical ideas.

This course will take place at MASS, County Hall on 18/09/08 from 13:30 to 16:00 to support teachers in making the curriculum more accessible to EAL learners.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To become familiar with a variety of practical activities and strategies for making the curriculum accessible, that can be adapted to use in different curriculum areas

• To become familiar with a number of activities and strategies for promoting language learning, that can be adapted to use in different curriculum areas

 


The following courses are suitable for Mainstream Teachers, Members of Senior Management and Headteachers working in Lower, Middle and Upper schools:

 

Course Title: Meeting the Needs of African & Caribbean Heritage Pupils.

This course will take place at Kingsland Skills and Enterprise Centre, Houghton Regis on 5/02/09 from 13:30 to 16:00. This course will be useful for schools who have significant numbers of African & Caribbean Heritage Pupils or isolated pupils.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To raise awareness of contributory factors when African & Caribbean Heritage Pupils are found to be at risk of underachieving.

• To consider and explore practical strategies to meet the needs of African & Caribbean Heritage Pupils

 


Course Title: Meeting the Needs of Children Newly Arrived from Overseas.

This course will take place at the Conference Centre, Priory Business Park on 9/10/08 from 13:30 to 16:00 to support schools in developing policies for working with newly arrived pupils from overseas.

 

Learning Intentions:

• To raise awareness and understanding of the needs of pupils from overseas newly arrived in Bedfordshire schools-including those pupils for whom English is an additional language

• To become familiar with practical strategies that can help to meet those needs (particular emphasis on whole-school approaches)

 


The following course is suitable for Headteachers and Senior Leaders working in Lower Schools:

 

Course Title: Excellence and Enjoyment: Learning and Teaching for Bilingual Children in the Primary Years (EAL toolkit).

This is a 4 week course, taking place at Beadlow Manor from 9:00 to 13:00 on the following dates: 30/09/08, 07/10/08, 14/10/08 and 21/10/08.

 

Learning Intentions:

The materials in this course will provide support for school improvement by facilitating:

• Identification of school priorities

• Identification of key features of effective practice

• Definition of success criteria

• The monitoring of progress
