National Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP)

INFORMATION ON TRAINING AVAILABLE

Physical Education and Sport courses are detailed in the joint ‘Bedfordshire and Luton Portfolio of Continued Professional Development for PE and Sport.’

The courses offered within the portfolio are part of the national programme of CPD linked to the National Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP, formerly known as PESSCL).

The government have invested in this programme to help it to achieve the target of all pupils taking part in, and enjoying, up to five hours of high quality physical education and school sport each week. This target reflects the potential that high quality PE and Sport has for making a difference to young people and whole school improvement.

In line with this, the professional development programme aims to:

  • raise the quality of teaching and learning in PE and Sport by helping schools and other to deliver broad, balanced and inclusive PE and Sport

  • improve schools’ understanding of how they can use high quality PE and Sport as a tool for school improvement, particularly in terms of attendance, behaviour management and raising attainment

  • improve schools’ understanding of how they can use high quality PE and Sport to support healthy lifestyles and physical activity

  • encourage schools to interpret the PE programme in an innovative way so that they meet the needs of all young people better and enhance their achievements

  • develop cross phase continuity and support a whole school approach to improvement and raising standards
