INFORMATION ON TRAINING AVAILABLE MA (Ed) SENCO Standards
The University of Northampton School of Education
This SENCO course is part of the MA Education and can be taken as a standalone course or as part of the larger award. The MA Education is a modular course, which addresses key topical issues in the broad field of education. The Course comprises of three awards, which can build to an MA Education. To obtain the full Training and Development Agency, SENCo Standards, students will have to attend/achieve both MA modules (worth 60 MA CAT points in total). This is one third of the total required to receive a full MA (Ed) from the University of Northampton and qualifies the student for The Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, if they choose to step off the accreditation route at the end of the two modules.
Structure of the course The course is taught, through a series of lectures, seminars and workshops, with additional small group and individual tutorials being provided for all students. Modules are also delivered via e-learning approaches and by blended learning. In addition to the main programme, students can attend research seminars and will have opportunities to attend a range of day courses and other related activities.

Dates and Content:
Module 1 SENCO Standards Part 1: First Session of 10 commences 23rd September 2008 (Tuesdays)
This module addresses the following national standards 1) SENCO Standards 5b: Teaching and Learning 2) SENCO Standards 5d: Efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources
Module 2 SENCO Standards Part 2: First Session of 10 commences 13th January 2009 (Tuesdays) 1) TDA Standards 5a: Strategic direction and development of SEN provision 2) TDA Standards 5c: Leading and managing staff
In order to support schools and SENCOs in accessing this professional development opportunity and developing their SEN knowledge and expertise, the LA will once again be fully funding the course. If the course is not completed, however, the LA will require 50% of the fees to be paid back.

Sounds-Write™
Sounds-Write™ is a linguistic phonic programme teaching the skills of reading, spelling and writing. It offers a structured, systematic and interactive phonic approach, which draws on modern research findings to produce a sequential and explicit alphabet code-oriented programme for teaching all pupils to read and spell.
Sounds-Write™ meets all the requirements for a phonics programme as defined by the DCSF (Formerly DfES). The DCSF’s independent assessors in December 2007 scrutinised the self- assessment and approved its accuracy.
The course is delivered over five whole day sessions which are usually spread over three weeks. (Two consecutive days, one day, two consecutive days). Each day starts at 8.45am for coffee followed by a prompt 9.00am start. The first four days finish at approximately 3.30pm, whereas the final day finishes at approximately 1.30pm.

A Sounds-Write™ Manual including a CD is provided for each participant. On successful completion of the guided assignment, a Certificate of Competency will be forwarded to participants.
