INFORMATION ON TRAINING AVAILABLE Teaching Assistants
The portfolio for Teaching Assistants has been sent to all schools. Below is a summary of the courses available:
4 Day TDA Induction – Primary This is an essential a 4 day course for teaching assistants in the primary phase. The four sessions will cover the role and context of teaching assistants, Literacy, Numeracy and inclusion.
4 Day TDA Induction – Secondary This is an essential 4 day course for teaching assistants in the Secondary phase. The four sessions will cover the role and context of teaching assistants, English, Mathematics and Inclusion.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) – All phases This optional half-day module is linked with other modules of the 4-day TDA Induction Course for Teaching Assistants and aims to give teaching assistants ‘language awareness’. The vocabulary and use of language associated with mathematics and English offers rich opportunities for developing EAL.
Behaviour Management - All phases
These 2 x half-day sessions will include
Planning for good behaviour;
ICT in Art - All phases These 2 x half-day sessions will cover a range of ICT activities and look at how these can be integrated into other art and design processes.
ICT – Primary These 2 x half-day sessions will focus on Understanding the potential of ICT in supporting learning and teaching.
Welfare of the Child – All phases These 2 x half-day sessions will focus on foundation training in child protection, disclosures and safeguarding pupils, awareness of Internet safety.
Understanding How Children Learn The Understanding How Children Learn module is designed to help teaching assistants in their professional role as part of a classroom staff team in effectively supporting and extending children’s learning and achievement.
Science for Teaching Assistants – Secondary phase Using group work, discussion and hands-on activities, this half-day course aims to tackle how teaching assistants can improve the pupils’ understanding in science. What is the role of the teaching assistant in science lessons
ICT – Foundation Stage This course will provide early years practitioners with an opportunity to focus on the integrated use of ICT across the areas of learning through the Foundation Stage.
Developing ICT Resources – All phases This course will aim to provide participants with the experience and understanding to enable efficient preparation of a wide range of resources to support teaching and learning in the classroom.
PowerPoint – All phases This course is for beginners who want to learn to use the basic functions of Microsoft Power Point Multimedia Presentation Software.
Basic Excel – All phases This half-day session is suitable for teaching assistants who are new to the use of spreadsheets, and will provide delegates with an opportunity to form a basic understanding of how this software tool works and how it can be used appropriately in the work-place.
Basic Word Processing – All phases This half day session is suitable for word processing beginners.
More Microsoft Excel
More Word Processing Following on from the introductory basic Word course and a period of consolidation, this session is intended to cover more advanced features of Word. Course content will be tailored to meet delegate requirements and objectives and will focus on aspects which have relevance when supporting the school office and children in the classroom.
Interactive Whiteboard – All phases This is an opportunity to learn how to use an interactive whiteboard.
Next steps on Interactive Whiteboard – All phases This session will provide delegates with an opportunity to expand their knowledge and incorporate the effective use of an interactive whiteboard for teaching and learning.
ICT – Secondary This course is intended for teaching assistants supporting teachers at Key Stage 3 and 4 providing classroom support where ICT is being used to develop teaching and learning.
Midday Supervisor Training These sessions will help to plan for even more effective lunchtime supervision and give an opportunity for discussion on issues central to the role of Lunchtime Supervisor
Working with Teachers This course will help to develop understanding of preferred ways of working through completion of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Apply this understanding to working with teachers and others, to create effective and productive teamworking relationships
We also hope to run sessions on supporting pupils with a specific need and supporting in design and technology details will be advertised to schools.
